Quand on me demande ce que je fais dans la vie, c’est toujours une question tricky à répondre parce que pour me faire comprendre, je dis souvent que je suis massothérapeute… Pis là je vais dire que je me « réduis » entre guillemets – et je veux vraiment prendre le temps de mentionner que c’est pas parce qu’on est mieux que les massothérapeutes ont « juste » 400h de formation sur papier : il y a d’excellents massothérapeutes qui ont plus d’expérience que moi – mais l’impact sur le corps n’est pas pareil. Il est aussi important de noter que sans la massothérapie, je ne peux pas faire mon travail d’orthothérapeute parce que je dois faire des techniques de détente, de relaxation musculaire pour aider les muscles superficiels à relâcher avant de pouvoir faire ma thérapie manuelle plus poussé, donc vraiment c’est pas le bon mot mais c’est le seul qui me vient.

Pour que tu comprennes mieux, l’orthothérapie est une spécialisation avancée de la massothérapie qui vise la posture, donc les muscles profonds de la posture et ceux de la respiration. D’ailleurs le préfixe « ortho » veut dire « droit » : on vient donc vraiment utiliser des techniques pour redresser la posture qui sont efficaces pour certaines problématiques très communes. C’est pour ça que j’aime appeler ça ma petite magie. 

Si tu as des douleurs musculaires, des tensions qui ne partent pas comme le haut des épaules toujours tendus, le nerf sciatique qui te donne des chocs à répétition, une tendinite douloureuse qui limite tes mouvements de bras, un tunnel carpien inconfortable, une sensation de souffle court, de jambes lourdes… ce ne sont que quelques exemples de situations vues en clinique, généralement dues à une mauvaise posture, une blessure, un travail répétitif, un trouble musculosquelettique ou un mode de vie sédentaire.

Quand on regarde ça, à peu près tout le monde a besoin d’un soin en orthothérapie, la seule variation étant la fréquence selon l’entretien que tu fais au quotidien. C’est vraiment comme une voiture : si tu ne fais pas ton changement d’huile à temps, ça se peut que quelque chose bug. Si tu ne changes pas tes pads de freins, ça risque de te coûter un set de freins complet et la facture risque de monter encore plus. C’est la même chose avec ton corps. Si tu ne l’écoutes pas quand les tensions commencent à s’y installer et que tu ne fais rien pour en prendre soin quotidiennement, tu vas m’écrire quand ça va devenir douloureux et soudainement « urgent ».

Entre la masso et l’ortho, il y a ce qu’on appelle la kinésithérapie. Si tu entends l’un de ces mots, rappelle-toi que l’on fait sensiblement la même job. En masso, on apprend les bases de la détente et on effleure le massage thérapeutique, mais on vise principalement les muscles superficiels, soit les gros muscles sur le dessus des autres que vous connaissez probablement tous : trapèzes, grand dos, biceps, triceps, ischios-jambiers, quadriceps, mollets, etc.

En kiné, on rentre officiellement dans le volet thérapeutique du massage : on apprend les pathologies articulaires inflammatoires, soit les tensions, les tendinites, les bursites et les dysfonctions organiques. Pour cela, on voit d’abord les différents systèmes du corps (cardiovasculaire, digestif, lymphatique, urinaire), puis les maux qui sont reliés aux organes. Bien que ça ne fait pas partie de notre expertise en soi, c’est utile à savoir parce qu’ils peuvent impacter le corps en entier et ça nous permet de référer en cas de doute.

En orthothérapie, on va se concentrer sur les articulations vertébrales et on apprend l’impact qu’ont les chaînes musculaires ont entre elles. Une chaîne musculaire, c’est comme si tu te visualises comme une marionnette et, quand tu tires sur un bras, ça se peut que ça lève aussi une jambe. Ce n’est évidemment pas aussi drastique dans notre corps, mais c’est pour ça qu’en clinique, si tu as mal dans le haut du dos, je n’irai pas te masser seulement à cet endroit pendant 1h. Au même titre que si tu vas voir un.e ostéopathe ou un.e acupuncteur/trice, tu ne comprends peut-être pas trop pourquoi le thérapeute te travaille le mollet alors que le problème mentionné est au bas du dos… c’est ça, les chaînes musculaires et la petite magie de l’orthothérapie, qui n’est pas siiii magique que ça maintenant expliquée. ;) On voit aussi des techniques d’isoposture et d’isométrie, les points knap et les points trigger, qu’on appelle aussi les points gachette.

C’est pour ça qu’en ouverture de dossier, j’ai besoin de te poser des questions sur ton quotidien. J’ai besoin de me faire un portrait de tes habitudes en suivant le principe des 3R (le relâchement musculaire, le redressement de la posture et le renforcement musculaire). C’est une roue qui tourne : il faut relâcher les tensions pour mieux redresser, mais aussi renforcer le tout puisque 80% de nos maux viennent de notre sédentarité. L’orthothérapie, avec sa base en massothérapie, permet aussi de réduire les stress physiques et psychologiques comme l’anxiété, d’améliorer la qualité du sommeil, de diminuer l’insomnie, de redonner une liberté de mouvements et d’avoir la possibilité d’une vie sans douleur.

La massothérapie, et encore plus l’orthothérapie, sont des médecine douces qui sont encore au bas de l’échelle et donc qui ne sont pas reconnus et/ou couvert par la CSST et d’autres assurances, parce que c’est malheuresment encore souvent considéré comme un « loisir » plus qu’une thérapie.

Parenthèse ici : il y a une connotation différente quand on parle d’une massothérapeute versus une masseuse… la finalité du massage n’est pas pareil. C’est une nuance de mots très importante parce que je te confirme que tu n’auras pas de happy ending en clinique.

Donc aujourd’hui, je m’amuse souvent à dire que je suis ta mécanicienne anatomique, mais mon chapeau officiel serait « orthothérapeute agréée du Réseau des massothérapeutes professionnels du Québec et masso-clinicienne MQ », ce qui me permet de donner des reçus d’assurances.

Oui, tu vas relaxer sur ma table si tu prends rendez-vous avec moi parce que j’ai besoin de détendre tes muscles avant d’aller travailler plus en profondeur, mais si tu veux vraiment juste un massage de détente, je ne suis peut-être pas la bonne personne pour toi.
